On 19 May, and in the presence of the Hon. Matt Keane MP State Member for Hornsby & the Hon. Philip Ruddock Mayor of Hornsby Shire Council, a 400 page book
Pennant HiIls – People and Places 1800-2010
was launched by Dr Carol Liston AO a local resident and current Vice-President of the Royal Australian Historical Society.
The book was initiated by the Pennant Hills District Civic Trust some years ago and follows on from the book In Search of the Pennant HiIls published in 2010.
Authors Helen Barker and Patricia Dewey are local residents who have both called Pennant Hills home for close to 40 years.
Helen has taken an interest in the history of the area almost from the time she arrived to live at West Pennant Hills and over the years has contributed numerous articles to Hornsby Shire Historical Society’s (HSHS) journal Local Colour. As well, she was a member of the research team for both Pioneers of Hornsby Shire produced by the HSHSH in 1979 and the Beecroft – Cheltenham History book produced in 1996. Helen has also written two books about the larger houses in Hornsby Shire (including several in Pennant Hills). Another book, Wesleyans written with Thornleigh resident Ralph Hawkins is a comprehensive history of the former Methodist now Uniting Church on New Line Road.
Patricia, who spent most of her teaching career at Pennant HiIls & Beecroft Primary Schools before retiring in 1996, is the current President of HSHS and is a regular contributor to the Society’s journal Local Colour. She wrote a book to mark the Centenary of Beecroft Public School in 1997, a book to mark the first 75 years of Epping West Public School (1925-2000) and has written short histories of
Hornsby Home Science School & Burwood Girls High School. Other works include the History of the Hornsby War Memorial Hall and she was the major contributor to Women of Hornsby Shire – Selected Lives. This book was edited by Jocelyn Powell and was published to mark the Centenary of Hornsby Shire Council in 2006.
